a nondescript village, Shimla rose to become the 'summer
capital' of the British in India. Its climate,
easy accessibility, unforgettable walks, a variety of
shopping and entertainment, and sharming architecture.
There is golf in summer, and sking and ice skating in
water. Shimla is connected by a broad gauge line up
to Kalka. The
journey by train, which takes about six hours, is one
of the finest ways of enjoying the lanscape. The delightful
rail-car, which runs on this stretch, takes about four
hours. Shimla is connected by road to all major centers
of north India. Buses to all major centers in the state,
and to Chandigarh and Delhi are available. Other state
road corporations also ply on the Delhi Shimla route.
During the summers, the Himachal Pradesh 'Tourism Development
Corporation runs deluxe services from Delhi, Chandigarh,
Manali, Dharamsala, Rewalsar, Hatkoti and Leh. A/c coaches
are avaible from Delhi to Manali. Jakhoo Hill
2 km, Shimla's highest
point. Offers panoramic view of the town, hill and distant
mountain ranges and spectacular views at sunrise and
sunset. Glen 4 km. It is a popular
picnic spot. A stream flows through this thickly wooded
ravine. Chadwick Falls
7 km, are rain-fed water- falls, past Summer
Hill. Institute of Advanced
Study 4 km, is housed in the former
Viceregal Lodge, this was built in 1888.
