Coimbatore and Salem One of the most important city of Tamil Nadu is also called the 'Manchester of South India' and is the third largest city in the state. The Headquarters of the Nilgiri region, its exposure to the palghat gap of the western Ghats gives Coimbatore a salubrious climate. A highly industrialised city, it is the center of textile manufacturing in the state. Coimbatore is connected to Chennai, Mumbai and Bangalore by air. It is very well connected to Chennai and some other important cities by train. The places worth a visit are "Perur Temple" built by karikala, chola is situated 7 km from Coimbatore to the west and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Also known as Mel Chidambaram, the exquistic sculptures in Kanagasabai are a tourist attraction. Maruthamalai Temple 12 km from Coimbatore, the presiding deity is called Dandayuthapani (Murugan). G.D.Naidu Agricultural University, Established in 1971 and is the 16th such university in independent India.
Salem Salem is best known for its steel plant. It is an important business center on this circuit. The nearest airport is at Tiruchriapali. The Salem steel plant is the main attraction here and can be visited by getting prior permission from the concerned authorities. Besides one can visit the Suganeswar temple, the Kurumbapathy Zoological Park, the Mariammam Temple and the Government Museum. Hogenekkal, is a massive waterfall in Dharmapuri region. Namakkal, is famous for its hanuman temple and rockcut caves. Sankagiri, is famous for the historical hill fort of hyder ali and Tipu Sultan. Mettur, built on the river Cauvery, this reservoir and multi-purpose dam is surrounded by parks and gardens. Tiruchengodu has been an important pilgrim center. There is a hill temple of Arthanareeswarar. |
