| Bhubaneshwar the capital of the state of Orissa, The city is appropriately dominated by the great temple of Lord Shiva- the Lingaraj Temple. Though given its importance as the state capital only some years ago, Bhubaneshwar's real claim to fame must rest in its temples. There were around ten thousand temples at one time in the city. The sprawling and still growing city provides an excellent insight into the state of Orissa. Bhubaneswar is a city where the temple spires rise higher than the palms. History, religion, sea beaches, archaeological sites, water sports, wildlife and more lie within easy reach of the city. Bhubaneswar is the base for visiting the famous Sun Temple at Konark and the Buddhist circuit of Ratangiri, Udaygiri and Lalitgiri, the area which was a center of Buddhism. Soon, Bhubaneswar may assume as much importance as an industrial center as a tourism attraction. The best time to visit is between October and April. Bhubaneswar is well connected by air to Delhi, Calcutta, Chennai , Vishkapatnam & Hyderabad. The airport is just 3km from the city center. Another one the Mukteshwar Temple is set in picturesque surroundings. Cuttack the former state capital is 35 km from Bhubaneshwar. Konark famous for its sun temples is 70 km away. Chilka Lake, the largest brackish lake in India is 110 km from the city. |
