has many claims to fame. It is a holy city of the Sikhs,
very intimately connected with the colourful history
of the proud, marital race. Amritsar city also hold
strategic importance due to its close proximity to Pakistan,
the Attari/ Wagha Indian-Pakistan, border being just
about 30 Km away. Life in Amritsar is deeply influenced
by the holy shrines of the Golden Temple
and the Durgiana Temple, Plus the sources
of the city's wealth: agriculture, commerce and industry.
Since Guru Ramdas, the forth Guru of the Sikhs dwelled
in the city , it was initially known as Ramdaspur or
Guru ka Chak.
The excavation of the pool -Amritsarovar-was initiated
by Guru Ramdas and finished by Guru Arjan in 1589 who
named the city Amritsar. Amritsar can be the base
for visiting the Kangra valley & the Kullu Valley.
It is connected to Delhi & Srinagar. Raja Sansi
airport is not far from the city. Amritsar is well connected
by rail to all corners of the country with direct trains.
Most people come to Amritsar to visit the Golden Temple,
the holy Sikh shrine. Durgiana Temple
also draws its share of pilgrims. Even though people
are very religious, they are also full of life and extremely
fun loving. OCM carpets & Essma shawls are produced
in Amritsar. Gold & Silver embroidery is another
notable product of Amritsar. Hall Bazar
is the main shopping area. Good shopping area.
