Beaches
in Kerala
"
Kerala " is a good example of how a place with
great attributes has come to be perceived as a great
place to visit. The National Geographic Traveler has
selected Kerala as one of the "50 places of a lifetime"
among its millennium destinations. 900-km length of
the Kerala coast is lined with sandy beaches, rocky
promontories and coconut palms that definitely merit
a visit in every tourist. Among other destinations in
India Kerala has become pocket-vebus of world destinations
with stunning backwaters, impossible greenery, a range
of Ayurvedic massages, great beaches, food and culture.
One more aspect of travel in Kerala is Ayurveda; indulge

Payyambalam Beach located
near the Kannur town this beautiful beach stretch
of sand and surf is the best locale for a relaxed
evening. A fishing harbour built with Indo Norvegian
project assistance. If the weather is favourable a
ride in the sea will be a memorable experience. The
remnants of the temple & fort are still seen in
Mopila bay.

Sankhumugham Beach located
8 kms from Thiruvananthapuram city, the Shankhumugh am
Beach is a favourite haunt of sunset watchers. An
indoor recreation club, the 'Matsya Kanyaka', a gigantic
35 m long sculpture of a mermaid and a restaurant
shaped like a starfish are the major attractions here.
The long stretch of clean sand is located near the
airport. The water here, however, is not suitable
for bathing.

Tanur Beach situated
in Malappura District this small coastal fishing town
of Tanur was one of the earliest settlements of the
Portuguese. St. Francis Xavier visited the place in
1546 AD. About 3 km south of Tanur town is Keraladeshpuram
Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu and believed to be
one of the oldest temples in Kerala.

Thanagasseri Beach from
Kollam town about 5 kms is the Thangassery Beach,
which is a sea side village of historic importance.
The rural settlement has the ruins of an old Portuguese
Fort and churches built in the 18th century. The 144
feet high Thangaserry Lighthouse is open to visitors
from 1530-1730 hours every day.

Thirumullavaram Beach 6
kms north of Kollam, thisbeach is well linked by
road and with good bathing facilities. This beautiful
beach filled with coconut palms is ideal for an
early morning walk as one can see fishermen gliding
into the sea for the days catch.

:: Valapattanam Beach
situated
in Kannur District well known for its wood-based
industries and timber trade, fishing harbour as
well as the main source of the irrigation project.
Kannur is that part of the legendary Malabar Coast
where King Solomon's ships anchored to collect timber
to build the 'Temple of the Lord' and to secure
most needed spices. Here in the little hamlet on
the banks of the river Valapattanam, is a giant
of the modern timber industry - Western India Plywood
Ltd., the largest wood-based industry in South East
Asia.

Varkala Beach a
beautiful beach that has a more than 2000 years
old shrine of Lord Vishnu. This beach of Kerala
is rich in mineral water springs that are known
for their medicinal value. The sea shore is called
`Papanasm' and hundreds of Hindu devotees perform
'Vavu Bali' on new moon days of th Malayalam month
of Karkidakam.
