One of the largest union territories of India, Andaman and Nicobar Islands are located in Bay of Bengal. They cover an area of 8293 sq km with 527 small and big islands. They are very near to Burmese Arakanmayo mountain range. The islands fall in tropical zone thus receive heavy rain fall during monsoon. It is one of the major reasons for dense, mangrove and evergreen forest of the islands. The vegetation covers an area of 7171 sq km of total geographical area. Therefore, government has established 96 wildlife sanctuaries, 9 national parks and 1 bio reserve where you can explore the virgin flora and fauna. Sanctuaries are an ideal home to 55 terrestrial species of and 7 marine mammals, 246 species of rarest of rare birds and 76 species of reptiles Further, considering the effect of environment degradation, the tourism department has started eco tourism.
